Exchange 2007 Now this is useful - I get loads and loads of questions about this subject. If you have a Dialogic gateway and are thinking of Exchange 2007. Dialogic has rolled out it's new website here. This website focuses on Dialogic Gateways that are certified for integration with Exchange 2007 Unified Messaging. These gateways support popular integration options to telephone switches too.

  • Eight to 120 ports of Voice over IP and Fax over IP connectivity per gateway

  • Tight integration to leading legacy PBX's from Nortel, Siemens, Avaya, Alcatel, Mitel, Ericsson, Siemens, and NEC

  • Easy installation and maintenance with web-based configuration and remote management capabilities

  • Investment protection for legacy equipment that also enables worker productivity enhancement solutions such as Unified Messaging

  • Support for SIP and SIP supplementary services such as message waiting indicators, transfer, hold, park, and caller ID functionality
  • Vista Michael Green writes: "In the past I've mentioned slmgr.vbs. I just used it to remotely provide a key to a workstation and activate it. It was very simple. The syntax took me a couple of tries but here it is -

slmgr.vbs machinename domainname\username password -ipk PID

This first step will provide the machine with a key. Substitute your info in all the appropriate places including your product key in place of PID.

    slmgr.vbs machinename domainname\username -ato

    This step activates the machine.

If the target isn't a member of a domain you can use a local administrator account. You also will need access through the local Vista firewall to make changes in WMI. This is documented in the Volume Activation Step-by-Step Guide which is a must-read for deployment experts. A copy is also provided as a document in the beta download of BDD 2007 on Connect.

These steps appear to work for any version of Vista. I have tried it on Ultimate successfully, if you're curious."

Exchange 2007 Microsoft announced that the first Exchange 2007 Beta exam will be in beta between January 2 and January 16. This is Exam # 70-236 which is focused to technology specialists. Essentially this is someone working with and administering an Exchange 2007 server. Now is the time to make all that time you spent playing with the E2K7 beta pay off!

XP and Vista As heads into 2007, the company faces a number of ongoing threats and challenges, most notably getting its large installed base to upgrade to the latest wave of products. "The larger the installed base gets, the harder it is to move, and the longer it takes to transition," told Al Gillen, vice president of research at IDC. Microsoft also needs to remain competitive against the open-source Linux operating system, on both the client and server side, as well as get its virtualization house in order so as to compete aggressively against established players like VMware.

While the software company will make Windows Vista, Office 2007 and Exchange server widely available at the end of January 2007—with Windows Server "" expected to ship in the second half of the year—analysts are not expecting enterprise uptake of these products to be significant in 2007. "In general, Microsoft's best year usually comes the year after the release of new technology, not the year of the new product release," Gillen said. But 2007 is not expected to be just about pushing sales and upgrades of the latest wave of products for Microsoft, but also a year in which the company continues to talk about its product strategy going forward and where it announces new product categories that will target consumers and small businesses, told Rob Enderle, principal analyst at The Enderle Group. Windows Server 2003 Windows Serviceability is pleased to announce the release of RC Refresh 1 (build 2845) of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003. This build contains:

  • Roll up of hotfixes released to date

  • Roll up of security updates released to date

  • Fixes for bugs reported by customers and other known issues on previous Service Pack 2 builds

  • This build should be only be used for test purposes. We will review all reported issues in the next build. In order to have a stable test environment we strongly recommend un-installation of any previous SP2 builds from your machines before installing build 2845. If you previously installed an integrated build of SP2, you cannot upgrade your system to build 2845 with this refresh; you will need to re-install a released version (RTM, SP1, or R2) of Windows Server 2003 before upgrading to build 2845. Kevin Remde answers some questions about the new way of activating Windows :

"I was reading an article in Windows IT Pro about and it mentions you need have 25 licenses of Vista or 5 Windows server licenses. Does that mean if I install Vista for only a handful of users initially that I can’t use KMS? Or do I need to get 25 users up and running to use KMS? 25 users are half of my desktop licenses and I’d rather upgrade a smaller number of systems initially."

Yes, KMS (the Key Management Service) is only available to use if you're maintaining 25 or more activations. The KMS service makes itself known in DNS (a special SRV record), and business clients automatically find this server when they start up if they need activation. After the KMS sees the first 25, it then starts activating clients (including those first 25). But not before.

So.. because clients have a 30 day grace period to get activated, you basically have that long to bring up at least 25 clients.

The alternative to KMS activation is (Multiple Activation Key) activation, which activates to Microsoft rather than to a local KMS service. If you have the KMS key, you also have the MAK key. (You get one of each from the same Volume License key source.)

    Chris also says...

"Also, the article mentioned I need a 'Longhorn' server to use KMS or I could use an add-on for Windows 2003, which isn’t out yet. Am I understanding this correctly, or am I missing something?"

You understand correctly. Support for the KMS isn't available yet in or earlier. You can install it on a Windows Vista machine, or on Longhorn (which is only in beta now). But yes, you should expect to see an update for Windows Server 2003 sometime in the first quarter of 2007.

    Aaron Tiensivu writes:

You might be wondering why you would want to do that? Simple. Laptops with slow hard drives or desktops with slow hard drives. ReadyBoost might consider your thumbdrive to be too slow to use for ReadyBoost but you can override it if you want. It can make the difference between a usable laptop and an unusable laptop with Vista. For example, an IBM Thinkpad 600E that has had the MMC-2 CPU package replaced with a Pentium 3 CPU.
I found the "override" reference here in the comments section.

Here is what you need to do:
    1. Let Vista test the ReadyBoost media, and check the "Do not retest this device" checkbox.
    2. Unplug the device
    3. Launch Regedit and drill down to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EMDMgmt
    4. Find the key related to your device (the device vendor/name is in the key)
    5. Change the following values: Device Status 0x02, ReadSpeedKBs 0x1000, WriteSpeedKBs 0x1000
    6. Plug the device back in, right click on it, open 'Properties' and enable the cache.

    Coming from Zuneinsider:

Today (Tuesday the 19th of December) we’re issuing a 22 MB update to make compatible with Windows . The update also improves the Zune software installation process, addressing the issues that some of the known issues users reported. Like Jason R said recently “It is plumbing stuff, but it is stuff customers will notice and appreciate.” So you should install the update, even if you’re not running Vista.

You can install it via Microsoft auto-update, or go to Zune.net to get it.

    Aaron Tiensivu writes:

I didn't know there was much importance in this until I came across this paragraph in a Microsoft whitepaper on driver compatibility

NDIS 5.x and earlier drivers must go through a translation layer. Windows supports . NDIS 5.x and earlier drivers run in Windows Vista, but they do so by translation to NDIS 6.0. The translation layer can significantly reduce driver performance.

Solution: To avoid the translation penalty, port NDIS 5.x drivers to NDIS 6.0.

For more information, see the white paper titled "Porting Miniport Drivers to NDIS 6.0.” In the WDK documentation, see also “Introduction to NDIS 6.0” and “Porting NDIS 5.x Drivers to NDIS 6.0.”

While Windows Vista, Office 2007 and Exchange Server 2007 are virtually out the door, Microsoft continues its march towards updating its server products to match.

In the latest move, Microsoft last week began shipping a private beta of its upcoming 64-bit server product for midsize businesses, codenamed ", " according to company statements.

The server, which is an x64-only version of Longhorn targeted at smaller enterprises will integrate together Exchange 2007, System Center Essentials, SQL Server 2005 and ISA Server.

Meanwhile, the company also released a limited community technology preview (CTP) of Windows Server "," which is planned to be the next major release of Small Business Server. Like Centro, Cougar is slated for release in 2008. (continue at source)

OMPM The Office Migration Planning Manager (OMPM) is a collection of tools that enables you to prepare for migration to the Microsoft 2007 Office system. OMPM checks for, and reports on, file properties to help you analyze your environment.

For the most part, documents created in Office 2003 and earlier open and behave the same way in the 2007 Office release. However, there might be instances where files require manual intervention or analysis to ensure consistent behavior. For example, a custom solution built in Microsoft Excel 2003 might require modification because it relies on older Office features that are no longer supported in Excel 2007. (more)

Windows Microsoft has a neat little way to prevent software piracy of their Windows operating system. “Windows Genuine Advantage" with its “Product Activation” requirement. Essentially, even with a valid product key, you still need to activate your Windows to ensure that only one computer is using that specific product key. If you can’t activate your Windows, there being many reasons for this, you are left with a 30 day grace period to change your product key to one that is fully valid or get in contact with Microsoft and plea your case. Once your grace period is up, Windows refuses to let you login anymore. You cannot access your files. You cannot go on the Internet. You cannot do anything, except the thrill of trying to activate Windows. (more)

Windows XP SP2 Update KB917021 was published on October 17th 2006. What’s that you say? It’s an update to “help prevent the Windows wireless client from advertising the wireless networks in its preferred networks list”. Those of you that travel with confidential information might want to investigate this patch. It wasn’t included in Microsoft’s monthly updates. Advertising the name of your preferred networks creates the potential for a man-in-the-middle attack. This patch won’t stop your Windows notebook from using a spoofed network, but it will fix it so that the hacker would have to guess the name. You can find more details on this from Brian Krebs and Knowledge Base article 917021. You can download it from Microsoft’s – Validation Required.

Windows Mobile Now this is an idea that should have made its way into the as-yet underwhelming and upcoming update to Windows Mobile, version 6: a built-in secretary. BCross at the MSDN Windows Mobile blog has decided not to wait, releasing an app he simply calls The Mobile Secretary. It offers some clever features for auto-responding to missed calls with text messages, for example: if a contact calls from their home phone and you miss the call, The Mobile Secretary can respond to their mobile phone number with a custom text message, optionally attaching any calendar information as an excuse explanation for your absence. Contacts can also be added to custom groups, which in turn can receive their own custom text message replies.

Vista production retail release. This "hack" resulted in machines that were called "Frankenbuild" machines inside of Microsoft. This build combined with a Windows Vista RC1 key would allow you to activate.

In a press release today Microsoft said it will release an update that will detect these "Frankenbuild" machines and force them to produce a new product key. The update delivered via Windows Update client will give people who have used this "hack" 30 days to produce a valid Windows Vista key. Once expired the machine will be forced into reduced functionality mode and will only have access to Internet Explorer. The RC1 keys have been blocked and now a valid Windows Vista RTM key is required.

Vista Research firm Gartner Inc. turned soothsayer on Wednesday by predicting that will be the last big release of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system. The era of monolithic deployments of software releases is nearing an end and Microsoft will participate in the trend toward more flexible updates, Gartner forecast in a list of forecasts about 2007. Mary Jo Foley, writing on ZDNet Blogs, has responded to Gartner's predictions by questioning the definition of a 'big' release.

"Bottom line: It seems a little premature to claim that Microsoft is done with major Windows releases. Even if the Redmondians further blur the lines between service packs and full-fledged OS updates (as they seem intent on doing), Microsoft and its hardware/software/services partners aren't going to let go of the concept of the big-bang OS update any time soon." As customers, running the tool when one of these three issues occurs will allow you to either solve the issue yourself or at the very least provide an upfront set of data to CSS for them to analyze and possibly dramatically reduce the time to isolate these problems.

Windows Vista Best guess on what it is: Fiji is "the next version of Windows" following Windows Vista and preceeding Windows "Vienna" (the version of Windows formerly code-named "Blackcomb"). Some people say Fiji will take the form of Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1. Others believe it will be a full-fledged, but relatively minor, Windows release — more of a . Microsoft won't comment publicly on the code name at all. Meaning/context of the code name: Fiji, like a number of the code names I'm planning to feature this week, is part of Microsoft's vista (with a lower-case V) series. When Microsoft officials acknowledged the decision to change the Windows Blackcomb name to Windows Vienna, they said to expect other products to be part of the "beautiful vistas" line. Some of the "vistas" are cities; others seem to be countries.

Back story: For the past few years, Microsoft's plan of record has been to release a new version of Windows client and a new version of Windows Server every two years. The thinking in Redmond: Stagger releases of more minor, interim (R2-style) updates with major, full-fledged ones. If the new Windows development organization under Steven Sinofsky sticks with this plan, Fiji should be out around 2008. If Fiji is simply the code name for Windows Vista SP1, it should be out by the end of 2007, right around the same time as Longhorn Server. (more)

Internet Explorer Microsoft today released the first ever update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 since it's initial release last month. The update fixes an issue where the browser would significantly increase system CPU usage when scanning a web page with the integrated Phising Filter. This was causing the end user's systems to slow down. However, this only occurs when the web page being scanned contains multiple frames. This update was not included in today's Patch Tuesday and is not yet available on Microsoft Update.

Wrench Looking for manageable Windows updates even without an internet connection? Heise's update 3.0 script collection downloads the entire body of updates for Windows 2000, XP or Server 2003 from Microsoft's servers in one fell swoop and then uses them to create patch packages on CD, DVD or USB stick. Those in turn allow you to update as many PCs as desired.

Have you installed Windows Windows XP fresh from the original CD and then headed over to the update website lately? If not, be ready for an unpleasant surprise. For a system running XP Service Pack 2, the website recommends that you download 60 updates at an overall data volume of around 40 MBytes. And don't forget: that number keeps growing with each , as the monthly event of new patches released each second Tuesday of the month has been dubbed. (more)

Windows Server 2003 Starting December 12th, the Windows Server 2003 SP2 RC build (build 2825) will be made available via Windows Update. LCS Microsoft's is hitting "private beta" in about 2,500 sites, the company said Tuesday. As it has already stated, Microsoft is adding VoIP capabilities, Web conferencing as well as incremental chat and presence improvements. Office Communications Server 2007, the successor product to Live Communications Server is due in the second quarter of 2007, said Paul Duffy, group product manager. (The "Live" moniker was dropped to avoid confusion with Microsoft's hosted Office Live and Windows Live efforts.)

With this release, Microsoft is making Web conferencing capabilities available for on-premise use where it had previously offered via hosting in . Duffy said while Microsoft is working with the major PBX vendors to assure its offering will work well with their new IP-based PBX switches, it expects a bevy of gateways to be available to let it also work with legacy PBXes. "We're focused on a continuum of choice so users won't have to rip and replace legacy PBXes. The gateways will sit between the switches and our product," he noted. (more)

  • Unified Messaging October 13, 2006 -- Exchange Server 2007 is the next release of Microsoft Corp.'s venerable groupware solution, and there is a quite a bit of buzz in the industry about what this release brings to the table. Aside from obvious management and administrative improvements, and new Windows PowerShell-based access to the product, Microsoft introduced the idea of unified messaging and aims to transform the way organizations handle a flood of messages in a number of formats. There are also new VoIP-based requirements for the new features. Let's take a look at exactly what's new and what's needed to take advantage of this new release.

; Exchange Server 2007 integrates the concept of "unified messaging" throughout all of the corners of the product -- a way of thinking about the Exchange mailbox as a central place to interact with the different aspects of a user's life. Exchange Server 2007 wants every piece of personal information or data to cross its path so it can help the user manage it, wherever and whenever. (more)

Invalid file are among the most common illegal URIs that we were forced to accommodate in . As I mentioned in a previous blog post there is much confusion over how to handle file URIs. The standard for the file scheme doesn’t give specific instructions on how to convert a file system path for a specific operating system into a file URI. While the standard defines the syntax of the file scheme, it leaves the conversion from file system path to file URI up to the implementers. In this post, I describe the conversion we use in IE, and I have a list of best-practices to use when constructing or manipulating file URIs.

    Proper Syntax

For the UNC Windows file path
    \\laptop\My Documents\FileSchemeURIs.doc

The corresponding valid file URI in Windows is the following:
    file://laptop/My%20Documents/FileSchemeURIs.doc

For the local Windows file path
    C:\Documents and Settings\davris\FileSchemeURIs.doc

The corresponding valid file URI in Windows is:
    file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/davris/FileSchemeURIs.doc

The important factors here are the use of percent-encoding and the number of slashes following the ‘file:’ scheme name. (continue at source)

    2. In the Computer window, click on "System properties".
    3. In the task pane (on the left hand side), click on "Advanced system settings", and if prompted by User Account Control for consent, click on "Continue".
    4. Under "Performance" click on the "Settings..." button.
    5. Uncheck the following items:
    * Animated windows when minimizing and maximizing
    * Enable transparent glass (optional, performance change will depend on the level of graphics card you have)
    * Fade or slide menus into view
    * Fade or slide ToolTips into view
    * Fade out menu items after clicking
    * Show shadows under menus
    * Slide open combo boxes
    * Slide taskbar buttons
    6. Click on the OK button to apply the new settings and dismiss the Performance Options dialog.

You should notice a gain in performance in terms of user interface responsiveness, although you will not see many of the cool transition effects.

Powershell Analyzer is a rich interactive environment for Windows . Its goal is to be the powershell host of choice for IT professionals and system administrators. It has all the typical editor and IDE functionality that you would expect when working on a modern language, but it focuses on the real time interactive experience as if you were at the console, helping you compose the commands you want to use, and also giving you rich graphical visualization of the results. Powershell may seem to just return text like the average Unix shell, but in reality, it is returning rich self describing Dotnet objects. Powershell Analyzer not only helps you with the INPUT, but also with the output. It shows you the properties of the rich objects that the commands return, as well as specific visualizers to help you interact with output such as XML, HTML, charts, tables, and hierarchical data structures.

Windows Mobile Not only Microsoft is disappointing users big time, by not releasing Live Messenger for Windows Mobile, but here comes another debacle: Microsoft's own Office 2007 will produce files that will not be readable with Office Mobile that is pre-installed in Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC edition!

Apparently Microsoft has just confirmed, rather unofficially, that support for Office 2007 files will be provided in windows Mobile in the middle of 2007, what coincides with a time when first devices powered by windows Mobile Crossbow will go on sale! Interestingly Windows Mobile Crossbow offers Office Mobile also in MS Smartphone version of Windows Mobile, not just in Pocket PC version, so the support for new Office 2007 files may be provided in these both Windows Mobile platforms.

Conclusion: situation is fluid and if Office 2007 compatibility is crucial for you, you may end up buying a Windows Mobile phone now, that will not be upgrade-able to Crossbow... or to a version that can read Office 2007 files. Unfortunately once again end users of Windows Mobile are in limbo due to Microsoft's strategy "to get new features buy new device with new operating system". It would be only proper for Microsoft to state clearly (and officially) what is the road map for Office 2007 compatibility in Windows Mobile.

Anyone who has called a customer support number recently has most likely heard the recorded message "To help us improve our quality of service this call may be recorded or monitored." When you call Microsoft Customer Support, one of the reasons that you hear such a message is that we have this really cool system that lets folks in the product group listen to support calls. This lets us hear first-hand the issues that users are having with our products. While I love this system, I am often humbled by what I hear. Of all of the calls that I monitor, the one that I find most frustrating (remember, I am in listen-only mode) is the call where the customer's PC just won’t boot. While I know I might be able to fix the PC if I had direct access to it, I know how hard it is for the user to follow a complex set of directions from even the most talented support engineer as they try to diagnose and correct the problem together. I also know that it's even more frustrating for the customer.

Wireless access is a key feature in , and it needs to work as reliably as possible for users. In the final version of Windows Vista, the default power setting for wireless adapters was changed to “Maximum Performance” to offer seamless wireless access experience and solve connectivity issues with certain access points. Users and OEMs can change the setting value to deliver additional power savings, if they want to further extend the battery life.

    Context

Test results from Microsoft and our customers show that some Windows Vista beta users experienced connectivity problems when connecting to public hotspots. In many cases, the root cause of the problem is access point or router hardware which is not compatible with the 802.11 power save protocol. The symptoms of the problem are either failing connections or extremely poor connection performance and throughput. Typically, these problems are experienced only when the computer is on battery power—connecting to AC power solves the issue.

By default, Windows Vista enables many platform power management features, including wireless adapter power saving modes. On all Windows Vista systems, the default power plan is Balanced, and pre-release versions of Windows Vista enabled Medium Power Savings for the 802.11 wireless adapter when the computer is on battery power. When the computer is on AC power, Maximum Performance (no power savings) is enabled for the 802.11 wireless adapter. This explains why connecting to AC power solves the connectivity issue for many users, as did changing the power plan to High Performance or changing the wireless adapter power setting to Maximum Performance in Power Options.(more)

The names has obviously changed, and Windows XP sticker removed. Interesting to note, Expression Blend is the only product name that has been trademarked. Why the other products haven’t been (yet)? Go figure." (more)

The New York Times has a dedicated reader program that has been in open beta since September 27th that allows users to read the Times on their computer in a way that more closely matches the experience of reading the dead-tree newspaper. Although I'm not a huge newspaper fan, I downloaded this application and it really is enjoyable to use. The New York Times Reader software relies on Microsoft's new .Net framework 3.0, which can make the installation take a bit of time if you don't already have it installed. I already had .Net 3.0 installed, so the reader installed in about two minutes.

Microsoft David Hunter writes; “2.0″ seems to be the new black:

This week at ITU Telecom World 2006, Microsoft Corp. is showcasing for the first time its full portfolio of solutions and services developed specifically for the global telecommunications industry. In its exhibit presence and participation in ITU Telecom World, Microsoft is highlighting the broad range of voice, video, data and mobile solutions it delivers to leading service providers today, as well as unveiling new products and initiatives designed to help operators create revenue-generating offerings for businesses and consumers, now and in the future.

Windows Vista I've heard a few people actually say ImageX.exe is included with Vista. That's not technically accurate. ImageX is most certainly a value add to Vista but it is packaged separately in a download called "WAIK" or . So let's say you want to use ImageX but don't want to run the full WAIK install. You copy imagex to a separate machine and run it. Works, but certain things fail, why? There are a number of other files you'll want to copy in addition to the EXE. To mount a WIM read/write and do other interesting things copy these files (everything in the same folder). Combine their total size is 1.01 MB. (more)

Activation Josh over at WindowsConnected is reporting that an illegal Key Management Service (KMS) server has popped up on the Internet. KMS, which stands for Key Management Service, is part of the Volume Activation 2.0 scheme to protect Windows Vista and Longhorn Server from piracy. As part of your license agreement with Microsoft you agree to not bring up a KMS server on the public internet. This server is a clear violation of that agreement, which I doubt they had.

Apparently the server is in China, registered by the same company that was responsible for a recent Word zero-day attack. If the only thing stopping people from putting these servers on the public Internet is a license agreement, Microsoft may have a much bigger problem on it's hands than leaked VLKs. You would think that those servers would be required to register with Microsoft every 15 days or something to stay active. (more)

Dave Northey mentions a nice feature to set a on your desktop background. Here is an example:

Navigate to the windows\system32 folder and type: ribbons.scr /p65552

Jenssen Harris mentions: /p is the flag used to tell the screen saver to use an existing hwnd instead of creating a new hwnd. (It's how screen savers show up in the little "monitor" picture in the Display control panel.) 65552 happens to often times be the hwnd of the desktop on a Vista machine, so the screen saver runs in the desktop. The reason mouseover doesn't dismiss it should be obvious if you consider the reason for this flag existing is for it to run in the Display control panel...

Brian Keller, Technical Evangelist for Microsoft Visual Studio Team System writes:

Recently I've been trying to figure out how to install the Microsoft on Windows since I couldn't find an "Add New Hardware" option for manually installing devices like there was in Windows XP and other legacy versions of Windows. Windows Vista caters to the plug-and-play world which will be great for most users, but it leaves those of us who need to do things like install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter scratching our heads. I finally figured it out, so I wanted to share my learnings here.
The trick is to open the Device Manager and then right-click on the root node of the device tree (which should correspond to your machine name). Then select "Add legacy hardware."

Mike Smuga, Program Manager for Windows Live Mobile announced. the availability of Windows Live Messenger for mobile browsers. Contrary to earlier reports of a clunky looking squared Windows Vista Media Center remote showcased at Digital Life 2006 by Neowin.net, the official Windows Vista Product Guide, recently updated for RTM, showcases a much newer and aesthetically pleasing design for the remote. Could this be the real one?

is going to be serviced by Microsoft in a unique, new way that will be a substantial improvement for customers in terms of system reliability, release predictability, and overall quality of software patches. Our goal with servicing Exchange 2007 is to respond to mission critical problems as quickly as possible with high quality fixes, and here’s how we are going to do it:

Exchange 2007 has been engineered from the start in a different way than previous versions of Exchange. One of the big investments we have made in the product is actually something customers will never see - a revolutionary test product that builds alongside the shipping code which allows an unprecedented amount of functional tests, validations, and scenario checking. Because of this tight integration and checking, our build system for Exchange 2007 is capable of building ship-quality maintenance releases on a regular basis. A simple way to think about this is that for every code defect found in the shipping product, a corresponding test case gets checked into and built within the test product. They are then run against each other and results are analyzed for any residual problems. The end result of this integration is that instead of shipping over time a large number of small, contained spot fixes for individual problems, we will continually build these into the product and ship cumulative rollup patches that correct all customer-reported and fixed issues on a predictable, ongoing basis.(continue at source)

The Windows® Experience Index is a new feature built into Windows Vista™. It is designed to help consumers understand how well Windows Vista and the software running on it will perform on a specific PC. The index achieves this by assessing the performance of the PC and assigning a score to it. The higher the score, the better the PC will perform.

The overall PC performance is represented by the base score. The base score is derived from 5 sub-scores for each of the following 5 attributes:
    • Processor - calculations per second

    • Memory - operations per second

    • Graphics - desktop performance for Windows Aero graphics

    • Gaming graphics - 3D graphics performance. Useful for gaming and 3D business applications

    • Primary hard disk - The data transfer rate of the primary hard disk
The scale of the Windows Experience Index ranges from 1 to 5.9. The higher the score for a particular performance area, the better performance you can expect from that area.

The scale is useful when comparing hardware components and when comparing whole PCs. The scale was created so that a full score point of improvement usually means significant additional capabilities in the particular sub area, while a better fractional score means an incremental improvement. The integer number of a base score is referred to as the Windows Experience Index base score level. For example a PC with a Windows Experience Index base score of 5.3 is considered a level 5 PC.

Over time, we expect to introduce higher scale levels of 6 and beyond. This will be done approximately every 12-18 months, as new innovations in hardware become available. When new base scores are introduced, existing scores will not change (i.e. a PC with a base scored of 2.2 today will score a 2.2 in the new updated index, unless its components are upgraded). Microsoft published an article about the windows experience index also, it includes a simple vbscript to retrieve the values from a Vista system.

Many of you have asked how to run IE6 and IE7 in a side by side environment. As Chris Wilson blogged about early this year, it’s unfortunately not so easy to do. There are workarounds, but they are unsupported and don’t necessarily work the same way as IE6 or IE7 would work when installed properly. As Chris said, the best way to use multiple versions of IE on one machine is via virtualization. Microsoft has recently made Virtual PC 2004 a free download; we’ve taken advantage of that by releasing a VPC virtual machine image containing a pre-activated Windows XP SP2, IE6 and the IE7 Readiness Toolkit to help facilitate your testing and development. The image is time bombed and will no longer function after April 1, 2007. We hope to continue to provide these images in the future as a service to web developers.

Now you can install IE7 on your main machine for development, and get all the advantages of IE7, like the RSS platform, native XMLHTTP stack, and improved security, while still running IE6 simultaneously in the VPC on the same computer. Most importantly, you don’t even have to buy an additional Windows license. The VPC image runs in a virtual machine that offers all of the functionality of a full IE6 installation without giving it any access to its host machine’s hard drive, registry, etc. You can make as many modifications as you want to the virtual machine without affecting your host installation at all.

Office 2007 That's right, after weeks of waiting, Microsoft just made the next version of its productivity suite available in limited trial versions, along with trials of all additional products available alongside the suite, such as OneNote, Groove, Publisher, Project, Accounting and Visio.

A website had previously been discovered over the web and announced a release date for those trials, and although it was then tagged as fake, it appears that the page retained the exact same looks, and its FAQ's mentioned release date turned out to be completely accurate. The trial works for a 60 days period and will then switch onto a "Reduced functionality" mode once the period ends.

It's Friday afternoon and I'm just getting ready to stop working for the day, but first I have to ask: Has anyone else seen the new icon for Exchange 2007? (on the left) Ah well, who can blame Microsoft for wanting the subliminal association with such a good brand? The only problem is that after a few months no one will remember that our logo (on the right) came first (by almost two years), and I'll bet people will start accusing us of ripping off Microsoft's logo! Hmm.. maybe we can license it to them?

Microsoft As Ina Fried reports, Microsoft's free Vista & Office giveaway at PowerTogether.com is over. Apparently, 30,000 copies was the limit. And Microsoft outdid themselves this time. With the average retail price being $399 (Vista Biz @ $299 + Office Pro @ $499 / 2), Microsoft just gave away almost $12M in software!

    Now, THAT'S cool.

Windows Vista The Hotfix writes: "I thought I understood Microsoft’s plan of record for Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1, until I heard CEO Steve Ballmer’s Vista business-launch keynote on November 30, that is." In response to a press question about SP1, Ballmer told attendees of the “New Day for Business” Vista/Office 2007 launch in New York that Microsoft has “no current schedule” for SP1, because the company is awaiting customer feedback before crafting it.

Hmm. That’s not what I’ve heard. In fact, it’s not what other Microsoft officials have said on the record. Senior Vice President of Server Tools Bob Muglia recently confirmed for eWEEK that Microsoft’s goal is to release Vista SP1 at the same time as Windows Server , which is currently slated to ship in the latter half of 2007. Windows Vista offers a fantastic platform for managed development, namely .NET Framework v3.0 (formerly WinFX). However, there are many new native APIs (not part of .NET 3.0) in Windows Vista. Discover how you (a C# or Visual Basic developer using VS2005) can take advantage of this new functionality. Daniel Moth has an excellent list of such APIs over on his blog - check them out.

Google Business 2.0 asked 50 people "how to succeed in 2007". Two of the key people at Google talked about company's intentions and plans for the year to come. The key words seem to be: simplicity, integration and personalization.

    Sergey Brin:

"Simplicity is an important trend we are focused on. Technology has this way of becoming overly complex, but simplicity was one of the reasons that people gravitated to Google initially. This complexity is an issue that has to be solved for online technologies, for devices, for computers, and it's very difficult. Success will come from simplicity. Look at Apple, the success they have had, and what they are doing. (more)

Exchange 2007 By now you've probably noticed that Exchange Server 2007 has a brand spankin' new icon. Gone is the familiar "Globe and Mail" icon of Exchange versions past, replaced with a new, dynamic and somewhat abstract "X." So how did we come up with this icon?

    The Old Icon

We started looking at the icon in October of 2005. It's funny how such a highly visible part of the product can become so familiar that you never think to stop and look at it. But we did, and when we did we were left a little bit puzzled. What was the globe for? Why only an email envelope? What about voice access and all the other great features of Exchange? The old icon no longer made sense and was dragging along in low color. It was time for a new, dynamic icon that could carry Exchange into the 2007 release and beyond. (more)
